Breaking the cycle of violence… in BritainIn order to highlight the growing problems of youth crime, and in particular gang violence in the UK, Daley Thompson, Olympic decathlon legend, recently cycled from Manchester United’s Old Trafford ground to London.
South African sport personalities like Gary Player and Butch James and international sport stars like Sebastian Coe, Sean Fitzpatrick and Hugo Porta, as well as entertainment stars, joined him for stages on his week-long ride. Thompson delivered a report, “Laureus - Breaking the Cycle of Violence”, to the British government. Commissioned by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, it shows how sports initiatives can meet the challenge of urban youth violence. Thompson’s ride was backed by Richard Taylor, the British government’s official envoy for youth violence and knife crime, whose teenage daughter, Damilola, was murdered.
